Video and Digital Still Cameras

 

Video and digital still camera applications have a variety of power management challenges.  Some cameras operate from single cell Li-Ion/Polymer battery sources, while others operate from two series connected battery cells.  The varied supply voltage requires drivers for the LCD display backlighting, LCD biasing and RGB LED indicator lamps.  Power port input protection and switching are needed along with step-down voltage regulation for internal circuits.

 

+ LCD Bias Supplies  

 

LCD display panels for video and digital still cameras require positive/negative bias supply voltages that must be stepped up and inverted from the battery source supply. 

 

  • Programmable voltage LCD bias supply drivers support this 2-channel output function while only requiring a single inductor for high power conversion efficiency and minimized solution size. 
  • Positive/negative output LCD bias supplies using a single inductor boost core typically must set a boost voltage headroom high enough to maintain output regulation to the maximum specified load current level. 
  • For applications not requiring the maximum load capability of the device, excess boost headroom equates to lost power and lessens the peak operating efficiency. 
  • Advanced LCD bias drivers provide user adjustable boost headroom options to maximize efficiency to specific application conditions.
  • Battery power consumption is farther reduced during device shutdown by minimizing unnecessary leakage current by the I2C bus.

+ LCD Backlight LED Drivers  

 

Video and digital still cameras utilize color LCD displays for the image viewfinder as well as displaying camera functions and controls.  Color LCD displays use white LED backlighting that require backlight power management solutions to provide high power conversion efficiency with flexible dimming control to maximize battery life between charge cycles. 

 

  • Backlight driver requirements are driven by display size, the number of series or parallel connected LEDs and the desired backlight control feature set for a given product. 
  • WLED brightness control current sinks need tight linearity characteristics that translate to high accuracy LED current over a wide range of dimming inputs and input supply voltages.
  • LED backlight drivers offer external control and programming options from PWM signal to full featured I2C interfaces to fit a wide range of product display sizes, feature requirements and processor capabilities.

+ Power Interface  

 

Battery powered video and digital still camera products require that have an external interface for power and charging require power port protection.  Li-Ion/polymer batteries charge at high charging current levels and require a stable power source.  Input power port protection is an important design concern, as reliable power sources may not always be used. 

 

  • Over voltage, transient voltage and voltage surge protected load switches protect battery charge management and operating camera circuitry in the event the device is connected to a faulty power source.
  • Load switches have programmable over voltage protection (OVP) shutdown thresholds and source surge voltage protection. 
  • Some port protection load switch devices also provide shutdown reverse current blocking.

 

Internal camera circuits often need power rail on/off switching to reduce standby or shutdown state power consumption.

 

  • Integrated load switches provide direct logic controlled power switching, which eliminates the need for bias, and level shift circuits associated with discrete MOSFET switches. 
  • Load switches can also provide turn on slew rate limiting and shutdown mode reverse current blocking.

+ RGB LED Drivers  

 

Video and digital still cameras use multicolor RGB LEDs as indicator lamps for various purposes from indicating external power application and battery charge status to camera functions such as focus lock and flash ready status.

 

  • RGB LED drivers allow for programmable control of LED color and brightness in an ultra small footprint package.
  • 3-channel RGB LED drivers permit custom color and brightness control
  • 4-channel RGBW devices allow for driving a white LED in addition to the RGB LED.
  • Programming interface options include Express Wire or I2C to ease integration with a wide variety of processors and operating systems.

+ Voltage Regulation  

 

Video and digital still cameras need high efficiency power conversion to create regulated voltage rails from their battery source supply to maximize operating times between charge cycles. 

 

  • For high efficiency single output supply voltage requirements, DC/DC switching step-up or step-down regulators can provide the necessary application solution.
